Collage Practice Lesson

We are going to make a mini-collage so you can get used to using the tools. When done save this as practice_collage.pdn (pdn is a paint.net file - it will keep your layers available for future use)

Open Paint.net

Create a new image that is 800x600

File it with either a gradient or pattern

Here is mine:

Now right click and copy this picture. Paste it as a new layer.

Now use the magic want to remove the white sections of the image.

Use the selection tool to select the donut

Now use the Move Selected Pixel tool to resize the image

Now let's put the donut in the upper right corner

To Deselect (remove the box) just use Ctrl+D, or click on the image with one of the selection tools

Now you have one layer started. Rename it so that you can easily keep track of your images as you go.
Look at the layers window.
Double Click where it says Layer 2 and rename it to donut.

Now take this image, copy, and paste as a new layer

Since the file size of the image is bigger than 800x600 you will get a message asking what to do.

Choose Keep Canvas Size
(otherwise your canvas will get stretched to the size of the image you are adding)

Now remove the extra color around the ipad, resize and move it over to the right just over the edge of the donut.
Rename Layer 3 to say ipad
We want the donut to appear on top of the ipad so move that layer up.

Click on the layer that says donut - then use the "move layer up" arrow at the bottom

Does your picture look something like this now?

Add at least three more images of your choice

Save the practice image and email it to me

Tips:

  1. Be sure the selection boxes are only around the pieces you want to move AND that you are on the correct layer. Otherwise you chop up your images when you move them.
To remove blinking selection lines: (Ctrl+D, or just click on a selection tool and click once on the image)

  2. Don't forget to rename your layers. It makes the project much easier when you get farther along.

  3. Layer items so they look interesting. Tuck items partway into the image, and use rotation (Ctrl+right click mouse and drag)

  4. Vary the sizes - make something little large and vice-versa.

  5. Use the selection tools and magic wand to create cut-outs and interesting shapes

  6. Save OFTEN. Keep the images as a .PDN (paint.net file type) for now. So you can keep going back to your layers when you open it each day.
