Photoshop lesson and assignment 5

Creating Metal and Other Stylized Text

Open Photoshop

Create a new canvas -
Change the name to Metal Button
I used a size of 450 by 450
Leave the background color white (you will delete this layer later anyway)

Click on the Text Tool - choose a large font size and a style that has enough width so that you will be able to see your metal effect - I used Lucida Sans Unicode at a size of 125 pt
Change the text color to a dark gray

Right click on the layer with the text in it
Choose Blending Options - Bevel and Emboss
You will see a dialog box with several options
Go ahead and try the different settings - if you move the box away from the image you can preview each setting as you change it
* One setting I recommend you use is to check the anti-alias boxes if they are available - this creates a smooth edge to your images/text
Once you are happy go ahead and drag the background layer down to the trash can

Assignment Five

Create a text with a metallic looking fill
Save it once as metal.psd
Now save it for web & devices

Change the file type to gif (look over to the right hand side for the options)
Save it again

* Notice that as a jpg the background changes to white
As a gif file the transparency is preserved - this is important if you want the background of an image or webpage to show through

Now find a photo and bring it in to photoshop
Drag the metal text image into the photo (like we did with the rooster)

I used a picture of the boardwalk and put my Metal text into it - it makes no sense but this is just practice :)

Repeat the process with words and an image of your choice

Email me both of the final images when complete - just put the words Photo Lesson 5 in the subject line
